Codie Thomas says the upcoming World Sevens tournament is an opportunity for City to once again showcase our quality against some of Europe’s best.
The Blues face Swedish champions FC Rosengard in the seven-a-side tournament’s opening fixture, before taking on Dutch giants Ajax and Bundesliga winners Bayern Munich in Portugal.
Thomas is no stranger to the big stage, having made her senior debut for City in last season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League, and the young defender is relishing the chance to represent the Club in the inaugural World Sevens later this week.
And the fast-paced nature of the format, which includes two 15-minute halves, no offsides and a smaller pitch, is something that the 18-year-old hopes will bring the best out of our fluid playing style.
“I’m really looking forward to it,” she said.
“Hopefully it’ll be a good opportunity to get out there and show a bit of what we’re about.
“With it being seven-a-side we’ll see more of the ball and the pitch is smaller too, so it should be exciting.”
A full-back by trade, Thomas is also interested to see how the new World Sevens format will develop her own defensive qualities.
She added: “With the space being smaller, I love defending so it’s easier to get the tackles in and help the team in that way as well.
“When the Club started talking about the competition and the opportunities from it, I was just really excited for the tournament.”
