Young Brazilian faced tricky debut at Old Trafford
Thomas Frank has revealed he was impressed by Souza on his Premier League debut and says the Tottenham left-back is ready to step in for the injured Destiny Udogie.
Souza was thrown straight into the thick of the action on his Spurs debut, coming on ten minutes into the second half of their 2-0 defeat to Manchester United after Udogie limped off with a hamstring injury.
With Spurs already one man and one goal down at Old Trafford, Souza was given a baptism of fire, but made a strong impression regardless, driving Spurs forward with the ball while also showing a burst of pace to sweep up possession as Amad Diallo looked to break in behind.
Souza, a £13million January signing from Santos, is just 35 minutes into his Premier League career, but Frank is confident the 19-year-old will be able to fill in while Udogie is out for four to five weeks with a hamstring injury.
A matter of days after Souza made his Premier League bout, he could be in line to make his first start in England’s top flight as Spurs host Newcastle on Tuesday, in desperate need of defensive options.
“He did 40 minutes last time, didn’t he, so I hope he is (ready to play against Newcastle),” said Frank. “He’s still shortish (of being fully acclimatised), but I liked what I saw from him when he came on, nice and positive.
“He did very well, I’m very happy for him. Coming from Brazil, 19 years old, to Tottenham, to the Premier League, getting his debut in one of the most iconic stadiums in the world. That’s a big thing so I hope him and his family are proud.”
There is room for Souza, who only made his first team debut for Santos in January last year, to improve - he lost all three of the duels he contested after coming on against United - and with Djed Spence back from a calf injury, he is likely to start on the bench against Newcastle.
However, with injuries continuing to hamper Spurs, the teenager is likely to be given more opportunities than he might have expected since arriving in north London towards the end of January.
