Sunderland are closing in on Belgium international Thomas Meunier, with the 34-year-old expected on Wearside today for a medical after agreeing a two-year deal.
The Athletic first reported he had flown into Newcastle on Tuesday morning, and, barring late hitches, he is expected to sign within the next 24 hours.
Meunier is available on a free after his Lille contract expired, having spent the 2025-26 season with the French club. His arrival would be Sunderland’s first senior addition of the summer, bringing significant experience to Régis Le Bris’ squad ahead of the club’s return to European competition.
The defender has represented Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund, as well as Club Brugge, Trabzonspor and Lille. He has Champions League experience and more than 60 caps for Belgium.
Originally deployed further forward, he established himself at right-back, with attacking contributions a hallmark of his game. He won domestic honours in Belgium and France, including league titles with Club Brugge and PSG.
Sunderland already have Trai Hume and Nordi Mukiele on the right of defence, and Meunier would add an experienced, tactically flexible option. Hume has also featured higher up, which could broaden Le Bris’ choices.
The move would align with Sunderland’s policy of blending proven seniors with a youthful core, exemplified by Reinildo Mandava and Granit Xhaka’s influence last season. The medical is the final major step, with the club aiming to wrap up the deal quickly before their opening pre-season friendly away to York City.
