Oliver Glasner has confirmed he will leave Crystal Palace in the summer, with the Austrian deciding against signing a new deal.
Glasner dropped the bombshell during Friday’s press conference, citing his wish for a ‘new challenge’.
“My decision has already been taken months ago. I had a meeting with Steve [Parish] in October international break over dinner,” he said.
“Very long talk and I told him I would not sign a new contract with Crystal Palace. We agreed at the time it was best to keep it between us. I told the team today the same. I think it is important to have clarity.”
The 51-year-old, who led Palace to their first-ever major trophy last season, has been linked with the vacant role at Manchester United. If appointed, Glasner could raid his old side for players who fit his system.
We’ve profiled three Palace players who could be of interest.
Ruben Amorim struggled to get Manchester United firing in a 3-4-2-1 system, but it’s a formation that has provided plenty of joy for Palace under Glasner. Key to the system are the wing-backs, with Daniel Munoz excelling down the right for the Eagles.
The Colombian’s all-action presence was evident last season as he led the Premier League for tackles won, while scoring four times and providing five assists. This season, Munoz recorded five goal involvements before being sidelined by a knee injury.
Munoz will be 30 in the summer, but has proven to be one of the most effective wing-backs in Europe since arriving in South London. For the right fee, he’d be a clear upgrade on United’s current options.
Perhaps the player of most interest to Manchester United. Wharton is understood to feature highly on the club’s list of midfield targets, regardless of whether Glasner is approached for the managerial role.
The 21-year-old has adapted to top-tier football with ease since arriving at Palace from Blackburn Rovers in January 2024, breaking into the England set-up and playing a key role in last season’s FA Cup win.
Wharton’s progressive passing from deep is something the Red Devils lack, while this season, he’s shown creativity further forward. He ranks third in the Premier League for expected assists and seventh for through balls.
Glasner has said the club will sell Jean-Philippe Mateta if the price is right and the forward expresses interest in an exit. Mateta has 18 months to run on his deal and wants to explore his options.
Juventus have been linked of late, while Aston Villa and Manchester United have both been named as suitors.
The 28-year-old has evolved into a reliable goalscoring presence for Palace, netting 30 league goals over the last two Premier League campaigns. His experience could help alleviate some of the pressure on Benjamin Sesko at Old Trafford.
