The World Cup has begun, and everyone can feel the excitement in the air. The USMNT proved they are up to the challenge of winning the tournament after defeating Paraguay by 4-1.
Mauricio Pochettino found the three keys for that victory, and with the recent result, the belief of being first in their group is firmer than ever.
During that game, Tim Ream, USMNT captain, achieved two milestones. The first one is already discussed, the first MLS player to captain the U.S. at a FIFA World Cup since Clint Dempsey in 2014. Now, the Charlotte FC defender has also broken another record.
Just like you read in the title, Tim Ream is one of the biggest surprises of this USMNT World Cup roster.
Before the tournament, the 38-year-old defender experienced an uneven first half of the MLS season, leading many fans to doubt whether the veteran would strengthen the team as a starter or become a liability holding them back.
But enough of this. What is the new achievement for the USMNT Veteran? Tim Ream became the oldest player to appear for the USMNT at a World Cup, at 38 years and 250 days old, in their 4-1 win against Paraguay.
Also, with his great performance, Ream also broke the prestigious record of completing 23 line-breaking passes in the match, the most by a defender in a World Cup match since 2010.
Another stat that showcases the leadership and game Ream did against the Albirroja on the World Cup debut. Now, the next stop is Australia, which beat Turkey, meaning they are a tough team that can surprise anyone.
With that said, Tim Ream must lead the team and perform the way he did against the South Americans, keeping their best player under control out wide while remaining a key presence in the air.
