It has been a long year, 2024. Changes, results, joys and disappointments, with the undoubted highlight being the celebration of our 125th anniversary. The last Rossoneri match of the calendar year is AC Milan v Roma, a match that will be played for the fourth time in 365 days: in our Time Machine, we travel back in time to a historic match that took place 33 years ago and was marked by some great moments.
Matchday 9 of the season at San Siro, where two teams that have made a good start to the season were facing each other. The Rossoneri, after a summer in which Sacchi and Capello alternated as managers, led the table with 13 points (5 wins and 3 draws), 1 ahead of Juventus and 3 ahead of a group of six that includes the Giallorossi led by Ottavio Bianchi. After an even start, the contest began to tip in AC Milan's favour with two close goals just after the half-hour mark. In the 30th minute, it was van Basten who found the back of the net after Massaro's shot had been saved by Cervone. Provvidenza doubled our lead in the 36th minute with a header from Gullit's cross.
Despite the double advantage, the Rossoneri continued to play an attacking lineup - and an attacking game - and found a third goal in the 57th minute. Massaro's diagonal shot was parried by Cervone, but Rijkaard was quickest to pounce on the rebound to score his first goal of the season. Two minutes later, the Giallorossi came close to getting their first when Carnevale's left-footer flew past the unmarked Rossi, but Capello's men were able to break the deadlock in the 78th minute. Tassotti's cross from the right was cleared by the visitors' defence, but Costacurta volleyed the ball in with his left foot from 25 yards out, leaving Cervone stunned. There was a yellow card for Van Basten in the dying minutes, but it made no difference to the result: 4-1 to Milan and top spot in the standings.
