TOLUCA, Mexico – The 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup continued with Deportivo Toluca FC earning a 4-nil victory over San Diego FC in the Second Leg of their Round of 16 series, winning 6-3 on aggregate, on Wednesday at Estadio Nemesio Díez in Toluca, Mexico.
The reigning Liga MX champs got on the board in the 43’ when Nicolás Castro blasted a shot off the post that fell perfectly to Jesús Angulo for the rebound.
Toluca doubled its lead in the 56’ as Paulinho pulled off a remarkable backheel flick off a cross from Jesús Gallardo.
Angulo found the back of the net again three minutes after as he put away a shot from close range in the 59’.
Gallardo put the finishing touches on the match in the 90’+2’ when his shot in the box slightly deflected off a defender and past the goalkeeper.
Toluca advances to the Quarterfinals and will face the winner of the series between the LA Galaxy and Mount Pleasant FA.
Post– Match Data
• Toluca advanced from a Concacaf Champions Cup series after losing the first leg for the first time in club history (since the format change in 2008). Previously, they had been eliminated in that scenario against Monterrey in 2011 and Sporting Kansas City in 2019.
• Jesús Angulo has recorded five braces in his professional career (including one hat-trick). Four of those have come with Toluca, with this being his first brace in a competition other than Liga MX.
• Paulinho reached 55 goals for Toluca across all competitions, scoring his first in the Concacaf Champions Cup tonight. Since joining the club, he is the team’s top scorer, followed by Jesús Angulo (21), who also scored in this match.
• Toluca ended a run of 11 consecutive Concacaf Champions Cup matches without scoring four or more goals in a single game. The last time they achieved this was in 2013 against Comunicaciones (5-1).
• With this result, Toluca ended two negative streaks against U.S. teams in the Concacaf Champions Cup: they snapped their longest winless run against clubs from that country (D2 L3) and also ended their longest losing streak (3) in that span.
