Manchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton is reportedly in negotiations with the club over a contract extension.

United are preparing for significant changes in their goalkeeping department, with the futures of both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir shrouded in uncertainty.

Onana and Bayindir have been linked with departures following a series of error-prone performances this season.

Heaton is another who was expected to depart upon the expiry of his contract in June. A report covered by The Peoples Person even relayed that the Englishman could be offered a coaching role alongside defender Jonny Evans, who is likewise expected to depart Old Trafford.

The prospect of Heaton leaving United grew even more likely following reports that the club is closing in on his potential replacement –  Preston North End goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

However, the Daily Mail have revealed a dramatic transfer U-turn, with Heaton now poised to remain at United.

According to the newspaper, “It has been widely accepted the veteran goalkeeper will leave United as a free agent at the end of June, and Confidential revealed earlier this month that Heaton could be offered a coaching role at the club if he hangs up his gloves.”

“But now it is understood the 39-year-old is in talks over signing a 12-month contract extension to remain United’s third-choice keeper.”

“That would mean the former England and Aston Villa keeper, who was the back-up option for Onana on the bench at Bournemouth on Sunday, staying in the Premier League at the age of 40.”

Heaton is in his second spell at the club, after initially coming through the Academy as a youngster.

He signed a new contract in July last year and it appears he could remain on United’s books for an additional 12 months.

Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim’s men are back in action on Thursday when they go away to Spain for the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie against Athletic Club.
