Sandro Tonali is leaving Newcastle United as expected, but he’s not returning to Serie A, as he’s headed to Tottenham. The Spurs are paying a €116M package, bonus included, making him the most expensive Italian player ever, Tuttomercatoweb reports.
The ‘regista’ already held the second position on the podium because of his transfer from Milan to the Magpies. He’ll now surpass Mateo Retegui’s move to Al-Qadsiah, which was worth 68.25M. He’ll make over €10M per year, plus add-ons.
Tonali has been often linked to Juventus in the past, but not recently, as, even if his exit from Newcastle United had been gaining traction, the numbers are too conspicuous for Serie A sides, and Tottenham won the race, beating Manchester City.
The midfielder kept the word he had given to Roberto De Zerbi in recent weeks, heading to London despite a late push by the Sky Blues after they hired Enzo Maresca.
Milan will profit as well, earning €11,5 thanks to a resale clause and the solidarity contribution. His first team, Brescia, will receive €3/4M. They have actually gone bankrupt in recent years and are just restarting from the amateur ranks. The influx of cash could propel their rebirth.
The 26-year-old spent just 2 campaigns with the Magpies, recording 10 goals and 10 assists in 110 appearances.
The buzz about Juventus has never been particularly believable, as his wages are an even bigger obstacle than the fee. It’s a little surprising that he’s not joining one of the big four in the Premier League, but he evidently must believe in the Spurs’ revamped project under De Zerbi following a hellish campaign.
