The winners of the Barclays Women’s Super League player, manager and goal of the month for January have been announced.

Manchester United’s Ella Toone collected the player of the month award after a stellar start to 2025 for the Red Devils while Sonia Bompastor collected her third manager of the month award.

Vivianne Miedema came out on top in the vote for the goal of the month for her second goal during a 4-2 win for Manchester City against Aston Villa.

Let’s break down why they won:

Ella Toone

The England international had a scintillating January for United scoring four goals including a hat-trick in a 4-2 win against Man City at the Etihad Stadium on the league’s return from the winter break.

She scored her first with a deft flick over City keeper Khiara Keating to open the high-scoring affair. The second two goals were as opportunistic as it gets. Firstly, Elsabeth Terland pinched the ball back on the edge of the box, allowing Toone to tap home from close. The Norwegian then terrifically blocked Keating’s clearance allowing Toone to race on to the loose ball and roll it into the empty net to complete her hat-trick.

Toone rounded out the month scoring the opener in United’s 3-0 home win against Brighton and Hove Albion. The forward saw off competition from Nathalie Björn, Millie Bright, Bethany England, Vivianne Miedema, Olivia Smith, Elisabeth Terland and Julie Thibaud to take the award.

Her imperious January form sees her collect the WSL player of the month award for the second time in her career with the first coming in December 2021.

Sonia Bompastor

With little surprise to most, Chelsea’s Bompastor claimed the manager of the month award for the third time this season.

Her Blues registered impressive wins in January as they look to retain their WSL title. Chelsea started the month with an emphatic 5-0 win against London rivals West Ham United. Bompastor’s side then took another huge step towards becoming WSL champions after a 1-0 win against title rivals Arsenal.

Playing in front of a record breaking 34,302 fans at Stamford Bridge, the French manager navigated her side to a late win after Guro Reiten’s 85th minute winning penalty sent the Gunners home empty-handed.

Bompastor fought off competition from Manchester United boss Marc Skinner and Spurs’ Robert Vilahamn to pick up the award once again.

Vivianne Miedema

The WSL’s all-time record goalscorer is at it again. The Dutch international has not slowed down since making her move to Manchester, winning the January goal of the month award for her thunderous strike against Aston Villa.

Having already equalised in the match, Miedema turned the game on its head. After receiving the ball with her back to goal, she beat the press, allowing her to benefit from the space created to whip a vicious, unstoppable effort into the top corner past Villa goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo.

Olivia Smith, Veatriki Sarri, Catarina Macario, Aggie Beever-Jones, Sandy Baltimore, Mary Fowler and Olivia Holdt were all up for the award but the City forward’s wonderful strike came out victorious.
