From the looks of it, strengthening the center-back position is not going to be a very high priority for FC Barcelona in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Catalans have already several options for this position in their squad, and today, on Saturday, also closed the renewal operation for Andreas Christensen, according to some reports.
However, they have still been linked with some notable players for this position, and one such name that has been associated with them lately is that of the Tottenham defender Mikey van de Ven. The Dutchman is reportedly looking to change clubs after the poor season Spurs have just had. The Premier League side Liverpool was also reportedly interested in him.
But now it seems unlikely that the player would change clubs this summer. This is clear from a report from SPORT, which reveals that the London club has closed the doors to any potential departure of the center-back. Their new coach, Roberto de Zerbi, considers de Ven to be an important component for his project as he looks to get Spurs back to a more respectable position in the Premier League.
One aspect of his game that would have made the Dutchman appealing to Barcelona was his ability to play as a left-back in addition to his preferred position as a center-back. In fact, he played on the flank in The Netherlands’ first game of the World Cup, against Japan. Furthermore, his speed and ball control are also other undeniable attributes that make him a highly competent player.
However, with this turn of affairs, it seems unlikely that Mikey van de Ven will land at Barcelona this summer, especially as the Catalans would want to spend their money on strengthening other areas of the team, like the center-forward, where Robert Lewandowski’s departure at the end of the last season has left a significant gap.
