Swede is yet to make a competitive appearance this season but has a comeback date in mind

Dejan Kulusevski is hoping to return from injury in time to represent Sweden at this summer’s World Cup.

The Tottenham midfielder, 25, is yet to make a competitive appearance this season after undergoing surgery on his patella last year. Then-manager Ange Postecoglou said at the time his injury was “just a knock”.

He underwent a fresh knee surgery in February, though, which he described as a “small intervention” on his social media, and joined up with Sweden’s camp for the March international break.

While he played no part in training or matches as the Blagult secured their qualification for the World Cup, he has set his sights on representing his nation in the United States.

"I haven't played in a year. I know what the chances are,” he told Viaplay.

“But if there is one person on the planet who can do this, I would bet on myself. And we are not just going there to participate. Sweden will aim to be one of the best.

"As long as I live, I will do everything I can so that Sweden, when we go out and play, will not be afraid of anyone. Brazil, France, whoever they are. That's why I'm on this planet. To give faith and love to my people."

It remains to be seen whether he will feature in any of Tottenham’s remaining seven Premier League matches as they look to dodge relegation under newly appointed manager Roberto De Zerbi.

In another interview with Viaplay released last week, he gave futher detail on his latest knee procedure and turned his attention to a ‘slow’ recovery.

He said: "I understand that people were worried, but it was actually for the wrong reason.

"It was really positive to undergo this small operation and be able to identify the problem. Now everything should be sorted out. Maybe because of things that won't be known because, at the end of the day, it's only God who decides and no one else.

“It’s just a matter of slowly and surely coming back. I can see the light. It feels better now.

"I really have a positive feeling about [the] World Cup in two or three months.”
