Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with West Ham United for Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium club have been looking to sign the Hammers star for a while now and it appears they have finally pipped Manchester United and others to his services.

Fernandes is set to leave West Ham this summer following the Hammers’ relegation to the Championship, and a move to Spurs is now inching closer.

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi wants reinforcements in the middle of the park and the 21-year-old fits the bill.

The Italian was keen to retain the services of Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha after his impressive loan spell, but a deal did not work out.

The Lilywhites have now gone for Fernandes, in a deal which could be up to £80 million.

His arrival will see Spurs sell Lucas Bergvall, who has asked to leave and is not short of suitors in the Premier League and across Europe.

Tottenham have already signed four players this summer, with Martin Dubravka, Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi joining the club.

Fernandes could become the fifth signing of De Zerbi’s reign, and a few more additions could be on the cards as the Italian boss would now look to bolster his attacking ranks.

Nothing official has happened with the West Ham midfielder, but Spurs are in control and in the driving seat, with the deal likely to be wrapped up anytime soon.

Tottenham have dealt Man United and other suitors a huge blow by striking a deal with the Hammers, and it is a big boost for De Zerbi heading forward in the summer transfer window.
