Leeds United will meet relegation rivals Tottenham before the season ends, with Spurs changing head coach but still wrestling a long injury list.
The club confirmed Roberto De Zerbi as head coach on Tuesday evening after parting with Igor Tudor following a 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest before the international break. Tudor was in charge for 44 days and left Tottenham one point above the drop zone.
De Zerbi is believed to have signed a five-year contract without a relegation clause. He spoke of joining a prestigious club, backing the hierarchy’s ambition and making the immediate focus climbing the Premier League table over the run-in.
His first match is at Sunderland, and he may already face a fresh setback. Midfielder Pape Sarr missed Senegal’s 3-1 win over Gambia, reportedly with a shoulder issue, and any time out could slow adaptation to De Zerbi’s demanding style.
Sarr has played 22 league games this season, with two goals and three assists.
Spurs already have Wilson Odobert, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario, Mathys Tel, Mohammed Kudus, Rodrigo Bentancur, Ben Davies and Yves Bissouma sidelined.
De Zerbi has seven games to steer Spurs clear, including hosting Leeds in early May, the third-to-last fixture for both sides.
