Recent reports said that Rodrigo Bentancur, the 27-year-old midfielder who has been suspended from domestic play due to a seven-match ban, is still eligible to feature in European competitions.

Bryan King, former Tottenham scout, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, believes Bentancur will be given the nod in the match on Thursday, 28 November, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Bentancur’s absence from Tottenham’s 4-0 Premier League victory over Manchester City on Saturday was due to his suspension, but now he’s ready to make his European debut for the season.

This presents an ideal opportunity for Spurs to bring him back into the fold, especially with the upcoming festive fixture congestion that is expected to put extra pressure on the squad.

While Bentancur is expected to return to the midfield, Yves Bissouma might be the one to make way. Bissouma, who has been a key figure in Tottenham’s midfield this season, had a solid performance against City despite receiving an early yellow card.

The midfielder managed to play the entire 90 minutes without further incident, but given the busy schedule in December, Ange Postecoglou is likely to make some changes, and Bissouma could be one of the players given a rest.

The upcoming run of games will require careful rotation, and Postecoglou will need to ensure his players are fresh for both domestic and European duties.

With Bentancur unavailable for Premier League matches in the short term, starting him in the Europa League games makes sense as a way to keep him involved and match-fit.

This would allow Bissouma and other midfielders to take a breather and maintain their energy for the Premier League.

In addition to the midfield reshuffling, King also suggested that there could be changes in the attacking positions.

Brennan Johnson could make his way into the starting lineup, particularly in the wide areas, to add some fresh legs and dynamic play on the flanks.

Tottenham’s attacking depth will be tested as the matches come thick and fast, and rotating the squad will be essential to ensure players stay sharp.

With the busy period ahead, Postecoglou has some important decisions to make, but Bentancur’s return against Roma will be one of the key talking points as Spurs look to maintain momentum in Europe.
