Tottenham Hotspur landed Xavi Simons in the summer transfer window, beating out Chelsea for his signature. The deal also benefits PSG, who will profit from a sell-on clause in their prior agreement with RB Leipzig.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed before the window closed that Tottenham agreed to pay RB Leipzig €60 million for the Netherlands international.

Chelsea had been tracking Simons for much of the summer but never submitted a formal bid. The Blues focused instead on offloading players such as Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson before committing to a move.

That hesitation allowed Tottenham to step in, sealing the deal after earlier attempts to sign Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze fell short.

After Simons left PSG in 2022 to go on loan to PSV, he wouldn’t return to the French capital. Moreover, his agent recently explained why returning to the Ligue 1 side wasn’t in his client’s cards after going on loan again, but this time to RB Leipzig, who would eventually buy him from PSG and sell him to Tottenham.

“PSG weren’t in this current phase of developing young players,” Ali Barat, Simons’ agent, told Le Parisien. “In football, there’s no room for regrets. You always have to look ahead,” he said, adding that his player shared the same view.”
