Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence was heavily criticised for a subpar performance against DR Congo at the World Cup.

It came as no surprise when Spence started from the bench against Mexico in the round of 16, but he showed plenty of character after getting onto the pitch.

With England down to 10 men, the 25-year-old made a crucial intervention to keep out an almost certain Mexico goal. He recorded one interception and made five clearances.

England advanced to the quarter-finals thanks to a fantastic performance spearheaded by Jude Bellingham and former Spurs captain Harry Kane.

The ability to bounce back might be Spence’s superpower. After signing for Tottenham in 2022, he struggled to break into the first team.

He went on loan to clubs in France, England and Italy but didn’t do enough to earn a permanent exit or captivate any Spurs manager.

However, he returned for the 2024/25 season and got a new lease of life under then-Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou.

The Australian tactician gave Spence a shot as injuries derailed their campaign.

He redeemed himself, and the season culminated in a Europa League title despite their dismal Premier League performances.

Spence became an England international along the way and has now earned 11 caps, earmarking himself as a consistent player.

His performances have earned him admirers in Italy, and there is speculation he could accept the challenge.

Spurs will be wise to ignore any advances from suitors as Spence is a useful player to have in the squad.

He can deputise in multiple positions and adapt seamlessly to changes in formations. Manager Roberto De Zerbi will appreciate those qualities.
