Tottenham will be without captain Christian Romero for the rest of the season, according to Sky Sports, a major blow for Leeds United’s relegation rivals and run-in opponents. His World Cup hopes are not thought to be over.

Romero left the field in tears during the second half of Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Sunderland after colliding with goalkeeper teammate Antonin Kinsky while trying to shield the ball under pressure from Brian Brobbey.

After the game, Roberto De Zerbi said he hoped the issue was not serious and stressed Romero’s importance, describing him as a top player with a big personality who is crucial to their aims this season.

Tottenham slipped into the Premier League relegation zone before playing at the weekend, with West Ham moving two points clear after a 4-0 home win over Wolves. Defeat kept Spurs 18th, three points behind Leeds, who have a game in hand at Manchester United this evening.

Leeds then play again before Tottenham next kick off, with Wolves visiting Elland Road a few hours before Spurs host Brighton. Daniel Farke’s side could be anywhere between three and nine points clear by around 5pm on Saturday.

Another pivotal date is Monday, 11 May, when Spurs host Leeds at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. De Zerbi will be without his captain and key centre-back for a clash that looks almost certain to be a relegation six-pointer.

Romero’s absence is a second major setback in days. Mohammed Kudus has suffered a setback in his quad recovery and is also likely to miss the rest of the season, with Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odobert expected to remain out and James Maddison yet to feature this campaign due to a pre-season knee injury.
