Tottenham vs Roma: Preview, predictions and lineups

Tottenham Hotspur host Roma in a tantalising clash on Thursday evening as two Europa League favourites lock horns in north London.

Spurs tasted their first defeat of their Europa League campaign prior to the November international break as they fell to a 3-2 away defeat to Galatasaray but an exceptional 4-0 mauling of reigning Premier League champions Manchester City at the weekend will have boosted confidence ahead of Roma's visit.

The Lilywhites were sensational at the Etihad Stadium as they bounced back from a shock 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town in their previous Premier League outing, with Ange Postecoglou's side showing how impressive they can be when on song.

Roma, who reached the 2022/23 Europa League final under former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, endured a comparatively disappointing weekend. Claudio Ranieri lost his first match in charge during his third separate managerial spell with the Giallorossi, returning from retirement with a 1-0 defeat at the hands of ex-Tottenham manager Antonio Conte and his Napoli team.

Former Roma striker Romelu Lukaku scored the only goal of the game as the capital side sank to 12th in Serie A. They have also underwhelmed in the Europa League, winning just one of their first four matches in the league phase.

Guglielmo Vicario is sidelined for the foreseeable future / PAUL ELLIS/GettyImages

Tottenham's euphoric victory over Man City was not without its negatives, with first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario breaking a bone in his ankle at the Etihad. The Italian has since undergone surgery and is expected to miss at least six weeks.

Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven were both missing at the heart of defence on Saturday, making Spurs' clean sheet all the more impressive. The centre-back duo will miss the visit of Roma on Thursday, too.

Wilson Odobert and Richarlison will be absent with hamstring problems, while Will Lankshear is suspended after his red card against Galatasaray. Mikey Moore is a doubt after suffering with illness in recent weeks.

Rodrigo Bentancur is available despite his seven-game domestic ban and could feature in midfield.

Tottenham predicted lineup vs Roma (4-3-3): Forster; Gray, Dragusin, Davies, Udogie; Bergvall, Bentancur, Sarr; Johnson, Solanke, Werner.

Ranieri is aiming to stop the rot / Image Photo Agency/GettyImages

Ranieri is fortunate to have a strong squad at his disposal and one without many injuries. The Italian giants have a few concerns heading to north London, with Mario Hermoso, Eldor Shomurodov and Alexis Saelemaekers all doubtful to feature.

Lorenzo Pellegrini returned to the XI during Ranieri's first game in charge and should feature again. Paulo Dybala, who was only a substitute at the weekend, could play off striker Artem Dovbyk.

Ranieri will prioritise defensive security over attacking firepower on Thursday and the same back five that featured against Napoli are likely to get the nod again, although Mats Hummels is pushing for a start.

Roma predicted lineup vs Tottenham (4-4-1-1): Svilar; Celik, Mancini, Ndicka, Angelino; El Shaarawy, Kone, Cristante, Pellegrini; Dybala; Dovbyk.

Tottenham vs Roma score prediction

God knows what Tottenham team will turn up on Thursday, with Spurs having beaten Man City twice and Aston Villa while also losing to Ipswich, Crystal Palace and Galatasaray in their last six matches. Spurs tend to raise their level for the bigger fixtures and the visit of Roma could bring out the best in the Lilywhites.

Spurs are likely to make several changes to their starting lineup midweek but should still have enough quality in the XI and on the bench to please the home crowd. Roma boast plenty of attacking threat but are still finding their feet this season having hugely underwhelmed to date.
