Igor Tudor has already confirmed one key Spurs starter for last-16 first-leg trip to Spain
Richarlison will start for Tottenham in tonight’s Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid.
The Brazilian has yet to start under interim boss Igor Tudor after recently returning from a hamstring injury, but scored off the bench as Spurs were beaten 2-1 by Fulham at the start of March.
Tudor has already confirmed his plan for Richarlison, though, declaring at Monday night’s pre-match press conference: “He will start tomorrow.”
Djed Spence and Radu Dragusin are also fit to play against Atletico. Both defenders have travelled to the Spanish capital after missing last week’s defeat by Crystal Palace.
Tudor has been struggling for options at the back, so he will be glad to be able to call upon the duo once more.
Conor Gallagher returns to his former club, a little under two months since sealing a £35million move to Spurs in January, and can expect to start after being dropped for the Palace match.
Tudor may not have been able to rely on Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven domestically, with Tottenham’s captain having missed the first three games of his tenure through suspension, while Van de Ven was sent off against Palace.
That said, having his first-choice centre-back partnership available against Atletico will come as a welcome boost as Spurs try to keep things tight in the first leg.
Tudor made some big calls against Palace as he looked to stoke a reaction, dropping Xavi Simons alongside Gallagher.
He then made a rather pointed statement in his post-match press conference when he appeared to question the commitment of his players, saying: “Those who are in the boat can stay, the others can leave.”
It is unclear whether Simons’ omission from the starting lineup had anything to do with Tudor’s comments, but were he to leave Simons on the bench for a second game running, it would make a telling statement about the pair’s relationship.
Spurs made three changes to their Champions League squad ahead of the knockout stages, adding Mathys Tel, Gallagher and Dragusin at the expense of Souza and Yves Bissouma.
Tudor has said that Spurs’ priority this season is securing Premier League survival, but he will view tonight’s game as a good opportunity to build momentum after a winless start to his interim spell.
Predicted Tottenham XI (3-4-1-2): Vicario; Danso, Romero, Van de Ven; Porro, Palhinha, Gallagher, Spence; Simons; Solanke, Richarlison
Injured: Kudus, Bergvall, Bentancur, Davies, Udogie, Maddison, Kulusevski, Odobert
Ineligible: Souza, Bissouma
