The transfer could ultimately cost the club up to £200 million. Spurs have reportedly tabled a £275,000-a-week contract to bring him to the club for the next six years.

However, matching the player’s personal demands is only half the battle. Spurs must still reach an agreement with Newcastle United, who are proving to be tough negotiators.

Tottenham had an initial £75m bid firmly rejected by the Magpies earlier this month and were told to return with a higher offer.

Newcastle are determined to hold out for £100m for the midfielder, who joined St James’ Park from AC Milan for £55m in 2023.

Meeting this nine-figure asking price would result in Spurs smashing their club transfer record, set last summer when they paid £51.8m to sign Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig.

While the transfer fee alone is staggering, the full scope of the deal highlights an astronomical investment.

Factoring in a £100m transfer fee, £86m in wages and further expenses in agent fees, the total commitment to secure Tonali could reach £200m.

Spurs are determined to land their man and are also in discussions with West Ham United over a deal for Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes.
