Tottenham have confirmed that Xavi Simons has a serious injury that has ended his season and will keep him out of the 2026 World Cup this summer.
The Netherlands international would surely have had a key role to play for the Dutch national team at this summer’s World Cup in North America, but he’s now out after rupturing his ACL.
Simons had to go off during Spurs’ win over Wolves at the weekend, and looked in a lot of pain, with journalist Ben Jacobs now reporting on today’s update from the club.
Tottenham have confirmed the seriousness of the injury, with Simons now set to undergo surgery in the coming weeks…
This is a huge blow for a talented young player, who will now have to wait another four years before getting the chance to play for his country at a World Cup.
It’s also a worry for Spurs as they remain in the relegation zone and need everyone fit if they are to stand a strong chance of staying up.
Jacobs also quoted Simons as saying how disappointed he is with the news of his injury ending his World Cup hopes.
“They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way,” the 23-year-old said.
“My season has come to an abrupt end and I’m just trying to process it. Honestly, I’m heartbroken. None of it makes sense.
“All l’ve wanted to do is fight for my team and now the ability to do that has been snatched away from me… along with the World Cup.”
Simons joined THFC from RB Leipzig last summer and has looked like one of the team’s better performers for much of what has ultimately been a really disappointing season for the north London club.
