The animosity between Manchester United and Liverpool is so gigantic that it has been over 60 years since a player transferred directly between the clubs.

Indirectly, United signed former Liverpool superstar Michael Owen in 2009. After struggling at Real Madrid and Newcastle United, Owen joined the Red Devils in hopes of resurrecting his career.

Now, United are allegedly considering handing another Liverpool academy graduate a career lifeline on the back of an underwhelming stint in the Spanish capital.

Real Madrid expecting Premier League interest in Trent Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold, 27, ran down his contract to join Real Madrid for almost nothing last summer.

The hugely controversial decision led to Alexander-Arnold facing the wrath of Liverpool fans despite his two-decade-long association with the Reds.

However, the Englishman has had a tough time adjusting to life in Spain, owing to tactical and fitness issues. He has started only five times in La Liga under Xabi Alonso.

According to a report in Defensa Central, a number of Premier League clubs are looking to take advantage of his precarious situation at Real.

Los Blancos remain confident in his future, but they are thought to be bracing themselves for enquiries over Alexander-Arnold’s availability next summer.

Manchester United enter race to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold

The Spanish outlet claim United, Manchester City and Newcastle United are all interested in Alexander-Arnold.

It is added that United would have no problem paying €40m to secure his signature from Real. Such an offer would be “attractive” for the La Liga giants who only paid £10m (€11.4m) to sign him from Liverpool ahead of the 2025 Club World Cup.

However, as things stand, Real are not considering the possibility of parting ways with the England international.

Alexander-Arnold is viewed as one of the best attacking full-backs in Premier League history. He has everything in his locker to play as a wing-back under Ruben Amorim.

Still, it would be very difficult for United to convince him to move the the Theatre of Dreams given the Liverpool connection.
