England manager Thomas Tuchel has reiterated his belief that his team is getting better despite underwhelming performances in recent months.
Now in Belgrade ahead of facing Serbia, England defeated minnows Andorra by just two goals on Saturday evening, continuing a run of disappointing performances.
“We are getting better,” Tuchel insisted, “Players want to have the ball, they are used to having the ball and dominating matches.
“This can then lead to facing another low block and a 5-4-1, but every match is different, every opponent plays it differently.”
England have been relatively short of goals during Tuchel’s tenure. The German coach admitted: “It is difficult to break down a low block. There is no secret about that but I think we are progressing.
“I’m happy with the work in camp, I’m happy with the attitude of the players and I think we are getting there.
“I say it because I’m absolutely convinced. I see what I see, I feel what I feel and I think we will get better and better.
“Our players will show their quality tomorrow.”
Questioned whether a draw in Belgrade would constitute a success for his side, Tuchel answered: “Ask me after the match. We are here to win, we are clearly here to win and we are prepared to try to win.
“Here we are. The rest are having dinner and I’m here with you guys,” the German answered on the difficulty of his job. “No, it’s a privilege. It’s not hard, it’s a dream. It’s a challenge that I wanted and it’s a privilege that I was offered this opportunity. I can assure everyone that I will do everything to be successful.
“I love every minute of it. It comes with scrutiny, it comes with criticism, and it comes with a lot of opinions. That is normal.
“It’s a privilege and it’s a dream.”
