Tullis-Joyce hoping that Manchester United can push for a great season | OneFootball

Manchester United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce says that she is hoping that the team can push for a great season.

The Red Devils were Adobe Women’s FA Cup winners for the first time in 2023/2024 but the club underachieved in the Barclays Women’s Super League, eventually finishing in fifth place.

Tullis-Joyce is set to pick up the club’s number one jersey this season. She is ready to bring her big personality to the team while she hopes that Manchester United can push for a strong season as a collective.

“My personal goal for this season is to just really let my personality show on the field, let my work ethic be a nice foundation for my teammates to know that I am right there behind them, no matter what happens on the field,” Tullis-Joyce said when speaking in a Barclays Women’s Super League media event. “Any mistakes and I’m right there for them to clear it up. I want my communication to be really positive and encouraging. I want us to really push for a great season together, no matter what happens.”

Tullis-Joyce is set for her chance in the first team after former first-choice goalkeeper Mary Earps left Manchester United over the summer. The 27-year-old says that she has already learned a lot from the past year working within the club’s goalkeeping department.

She said “I’ve had the fortunate experience of training with Mary [Earps], training with Saf [Middleton-Patel] and training with Wilco [Ian Willcock]. All three are very dedicated personalities to their craft and the art of goalkeeping.

“Mary’s quite a laugh, she’s a funny individual. What I learned from Mary last season was that you can laugh in a training session but you have to set very high standards for everyone involved in the session. That’s what I took away from that and that helps with my preparation for this season.”

Manchester United will be targeting a top-three finish in this season’s Barclays Women’s Super League along with success in the domestic cups. Tullis-Joyce is aware of the long-term goals but says that the initial focus is on building the team’s identity.

She said “As a group, we are focusing more on the feeling of this season. We are coming into this with a new group, a young group and we just want to approach the field with our own style, our own personality; who we are and what we want to be. I think that in itself will take us very far.

“There are the actual tangible successes that everyone’s chasing but first, we need that step and we will follow with that.”
