Mike Maignan’s recent performances have raised doubts regarding his renewal, and ironically his replacement could arrive from Lille.
As Tuttosport (via MilanNews) reports this morning, the Milan directors have been forced to ask themselves whether Maignan justifies a big pay rise given the mistakes that he has made in the past few weeks.
Considering the value of the player and his importance in the dressing room – plus his status as the captain since Sergio Conceicao arrives – the answer to the question could be yes. Yet, his dip in form during 2025 has forced a pause for reflection.
At this rate, Maignan even risks losing his place in the national team at the hands of Lucas Chevalier, the 23-year-old who has become Lille’s starter. In fact, the Rossoneri management have taken note of his name and he could well be the main target if they decide to change goalkeepers.
Chevalier is not the only option that Milan are monitoring, because Elia Caprile of Cagliari – who was excellent during the 1-1 draw at San Siro in January – is another profile that the directors are looking at closely.
Milan would also evaluate Marco Carnesecchi as a possible replacement for Maignan, but it seems that the Italian would be a much more difficult pursuit given that Atalanta want around €40m in order to sell.
