For months now, Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni has been touted as one of the priority targets for FC Barcelona heading into the summer window.

With the club looking for a new left-footed centre-half, the Italian international generated consensus within the club. An operation for the 27-year-old seemed to be on track as well, with the player keen on the switch.

In recent days, however, multiple reliable sources have confirmed that Barcelona have halted their pursuit of Bastoni. Hansi Flick’s doubt about the defender’s profile has been suggested as the reason for it.

Two reasons why Barcelona are pulling the plug on Bastoni deal

However, according to Mundo Deportivo, two other key factors have played a major role in Barcelona cooling their interest in signing Bastoni.

One of the reasons is Gerard Martin’s development, as he has established himself in the left-centre-back role. The Spaniard has forged a formidable partnership with Pau Cubarsi, leaving those at the club impressed heavily.

Another key factor is that, if a major financial investment is made, it will be for a goalscoring centre-forward following Robert Lewandowski’s announced departure.

That is currently viewed as the squad’s greatest need, rather than reinforcing the left side of central defence.

Barcelona’s interest in Bastoni did exist, but there was always a clear understanding that it would not happen at any price, especially considering that the Italian defender’s contract runs until 2028.

At present, the club’s sporting department has no plans to pay the €60 million fee that Inter are demanding.

Bastoni move in 2027?

If Bastoni does not renew his contract at Inter Milan and wishes to leave, market logic suggests that in 2027 the transfer fee would naturally be lower because of the risk that he could leave for free in 2028.

At 28 or 29 years old, he would still be considered to be at an ideal age to succeed should Barcelona reconsider the move in the future.

For now, however, the club’s major investment, if the return to the 1:1 financial rule becomes a reality, will be directed toward signing a striker, which has become Flick’s priority.
