UEFA confirmed the cancellation of the Finalissima between Euro 2024 winners Spain and Copa América 2024 champions Argentina, citing the current political situation in the region. The match had been scheduled for 27 March in Qatar after talks with local organisers.
The decision was described as a major disappointment, with appreciation for Qatar’s record in staging top events and a stated certainty that peace would return to the region soon.
Created through UEFA and CONMEBOL collaboration, the Finalissima brings together the champions of Europe and South America. Argentina won the inaugural 2022 edition, beating Italy 3-0 at Wembley in London.
UEFA explored alternatives. A 27 March fixture at the Santiago Bernabéu with a 50 percent split of supporters was rejected by Argentina. A two-legged plan, Bernabéu on 27 March and a return in Buenos Aires during an international window before Euro 2028 and Copa América 2028, with a 50 percent split for Madrid, was also turned down.
A neutral European venue on 27 March, as announced on 18 December 2025, or on 30 March, was proposed but again declined. Argentina countered with a post-World Cup date, which Spain could not accommodate, then declared availability only for 31 March, which proved unworkable. This edition has therefore been cancelled.
Thanks were extended to Real Madrid for efforts at extremely short notice, and to Qatar’s organisers and authorities. The Spanish federation was also thanked for its flexibility throughout the process.
