Unai Emery sealed a fifth Europa League on Wednesday as Aston Villa beat Freiburg 3-0. He then reflected on Valencia and the clubs that shaped him, with Champions League football to come next season.

"I learned at Valencia what Europe was, how to understand it and how to compete in it, although I was not lucky enough to win in either the Europa League or the Champions League," he said, speaking to Cope.

Emery stressed Valencia first, the Mestalla job being his first major post after leaving Almería. He then highlighted Sevilla, saying they taught him to love the competition, which he won three times, putting the club on the international map.

He also looked back on Villarreal, where he later lifted the trophy, offering thanks to the Roig family, before turning to his current success with Villa.

Emery noted that Aston Villa, European Cup winners more than four decades ago, felt deeply the chance to lift a European trophy again. His latest triumph reinforces a reputation long since earned.
