Unai Núñez faces parent club Celta with Valencia at Mestalla, the Galicians do not use fear clauses in loans and he remains under contract there until 2029.
AS reports that Celta paid seven million euros for the defender, their ninth costliest signing, yet across the past two seasons he has played for Athletic Club, Hellas Verona and now Valencia, with 15, 18 and seven appearances respectively.
Returning to Spain on a swift January loan, he has started seven of the eight league games available. Carlos Corberán has used him at right-back and he will start there again against Claudio Giráldez’s recently renewed side.
In Valencia he is viewed as key to the revival. The club also added Sadiq and Guido to steer clear of relegation, and today can move within three points of sixth-placed Celta, who are seeking breathing space before Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final against Freiburg.
There is talk in Valencia of keeping Núñez, though it does not depend solely on the club. Decisions are pending in defence, including whether to renew Cömert, how Justin De Haas fits, and whether to retain or sell Tárrega, Copete or the injured Diakhaby.
Núñez is delighted with his Mestalla spell but must return to Celta in July, as the loan carries no purchase option. A year ago Athletic held a four million option.
In Vigo it is suggested he is not in the plans and an exit will be sought, largely for financial reasons. His displays there were steady under Eduardo Coudet, Carlos Carvalhal, Rafa Benítez and Giráldez, but his salary and amortisation weighed heavily and Celta moved him on in 2024 to register, among others, Marcos Alonso.
