After Spain’s World Cup triumph over Argentina, Unai Simón kept a light-hearted promise to DAZN reporter Elena G. Durán. Their pitchside moment capped a tournament-long rapport built on her fist-bump game and offbeat questions.
According to Superdeporte, their bond drew notice after Spain reached the final on Durán’s birthday. Unlike the other players, to whom she handed sweets, Simón had arrived with treats for her, and when she later rang to offer him chocolate bars he asked her to give them to him at the last match. The pledge lingered until the final.
The reunion came during the celebrations, when Durán asked how he was. Simón joked he felt empty, adding he had more Sugus inside, before she reminded him of their pact. After a fist bump she handed him two chocolate bars, promise fulfilled.
The exchange underlined the easy rapport she has developed with several Spain players in coverage designed for social media. Durán later posted pitchside photos with players and relatives, including Marc Cucurella’s partner and Lamine Yamal’s mother.
Asked how he felt after becoming world champion, Simón said they would only grasp the scale of it once back in Spain. Durán also noted that Spain conceded only one goal across the tournament, and Simón, the World Cup 2026 Golden Glove, shared the credit with team-mates and the head coach.
