Enzo Maresca has just taken his press conference for tomorrow’s game against Cardiff in the EFL Cup, but of course the conversation was dominated by chat about his future.
The Blues boss lashed out after Saturday’s win over Everton, saying that he had just had the worst 48 hours of his Chelsea career. But pressed for more detail on who he was talking about, he remained pretty coy.

Eventually the media did give up and ask a few questions about the game. Maresca had been demanding to speak about Cardiff right from the start, so he was relieved to have the chance for a brief break from the tension.
“[Cardiff manager Brian Barry-Murphy] is doing a great job,” Maresca said when asked about what he expected from tomorrow’s opposition.
“They are top of the league, playing nice football and winning games. We need to pay attention and be careful. We can achieve the third semi-finals in 18 months.”
That was a very obvious attempt to point at his impressive CV at cup record at Chelsea under these pressured circumstances.
“[Winning the Carabao Cup] is something that we want to achieve for the fans. It’s a club with all its history, we need to do our best tomorrow to try and achieve the third semi-final.”
While this has all been a major distraction, he has to think long and hard about rotation for tomorrow’s game, the last chance to really mix things up for a while given the intense string of fixtures coming up for the Blues.
Maresca had to fend off questions about his Chelsea future in the same press conference, insisting on his commitment despite the rift that seems to be opening. He knows that all he can do now is win some games and lift the mood again.
