Manchester United are advancing their summer transfer strategy at a rapid pace, quickly securing the signings they need in order to become a formidable force as the new season gets underway.
The summer transfer window got off to a blistering start, with Man United securing the signing of the high-flying Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Combining with him as a number 10 in manager Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation is fellow new arrival Bryan Mbeumo, another proven Premier League star who enjoyed a standout season with Brentford. They’re joined by Diego Leon, a promising youngster who will help out at the crucial wing-back position.
Of course, United’s most recent transfer also made waves in the media. Finally, the club was able to sign a proven striker who could lead the front line, Benjamin Sesko, who arrived at the club this past weekend.
But even with all this resounding success in the market, there is one position that is in desperate need of overhauling.
The goalkeeper crisis
While there was plenty of hope for Andre Onana when he replaced David de Gea between the sticks in 2023, he has struggled to replicate the fine form he enjoyed before leaving Inter Milan.
Meanwhile, his deputy, Altay Bayindir, has also been guilty of a series of blunders, struggling to prove himself as a reliable option as well.
Given this issue, United have been linked with several goalkeepers this summer, including World Cup-winner Emiliano Martinez and Senne Lammens.
Still, there is one candidate who seems to stand out from the rest, especially given recent developments in his heated transfer race.
A golden opportunity
In recent days, rumours have been growing about United’s reported interest in PSG star Gianluigi Donnarumma.
A reigning Champions League winner and UEFA Euro 2020 winner with Italy, Donnarumma is an experienced and reliable shot-stopper, shining on the biggest stages that football has to offer.
It appears that United have a lucrative opportunity to sign the Italian, especially since he decided against signing a contract extension with PSG.
What’s more, it was reported that United prepared an opening bid for Donnarumma, signalling how seriously they are considering him.
According to a fresh update, there is just one thing standing between the club and this elite goalkeeper.
United can sign Donnarumma on one condition
This morning, Jan Aage Fjørtoft took to X to announce what needs to happen before Amorim can get the deal over the line.
“Re: Donnarumma. I have been told that a deal will be «expensive» and «it won’t happen before we sell more players,” he posted.
If Fjørtoft’s post is to be believed, it appears that United may have overstretched their budget in a short space of time, especially as they look to sign elite players early in the transfer window in order to give them ample time to train with United and adjust to life at Old Trafford.
Hopefully, United will push through some sales quickly in order to raise the money needed to get a deal for Donnarumma over the line, especially so that he can be given ample time to train with the squad before the new season commences.
