Wolfsburg ended Manchester United’s perfect start in this season’s Women’s Champions League with a 5-2 home win, leaving the English side with plenty to reflect on.

United took the lead early through Fridolina Rolfö’s header in the 14th minute, but Wolfsburg quickly responded. Ella Peddemors equalised just three minutes later after a mix-up between goalkeeper Safia Middleton-Patel and captain Maya Le Tissier, before putting her side ahead in the 37th minute.

Lineth Beerensteyn added a third just before half-time, with Melvine Malard replying for United in stoppage time to make it 3-2.

The second half saw Wolfsburg pull away. Beerensteyn scored again in the 65th minute, and substitute Vivien Endemann sealed the win in added time following a sloppy back-pass from Jayde Riviere.

United, without first-choice goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce, struggled to deal with Wolfsburg’s direct attacks, while the German side capitalised on defensive errors and clinical finishing.

The win lifts Wolfsburg to third in the League Phase, leaving United in fourth. The German side next face Real Madrid in the Champions League, while United look to regroup for their remaining fixtures.
