An ‘unsettled’ goalkeeper could become a ‘future target’ for newly promoted Sunderland as they close in on a goalkeeping coach, according to journalist Alan Nixon.
Regis Le Bris is looking to make sure Sunderland can handle the demands of the Premier League after he led them to the Promised Land in just his first campaign as boss at the club.
Tommy Watson and Jobe Bellingham have been lost, while goalkeeper Anthony Patterson has continued to generate interest.
Sunderland are now looking to bring in goalkeeping coach Neil Cutlet, who was previously at Wolves.
And that could put Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who is ‘unsettled’ on the radar as a ‘future target’ for Sunderland.
Johnstone lost his spot between the sticks at Molineux in the recent season and has been tipped to depart the Premier League club.
He ended the campaign with just seven league outings to his name and, at the age of 32, is keen to be playing regular football.
Sunderland could view Johnstone as a solid addition as they seek to adjust to the demands of life back in the Premier League.
He played in all Wolves’ three FA Cup games last season and conceded just one goal outside of a penalty shootout.
The shot-stopper also has England experience, with four caps to his name, and if he wants to force his way back into the squad then he will need to be playing.
Johnstone has also been linked with another newly promoted Premier League side in the shape of Leeds United.
It is unclear just what fee Wolves would want for the goalkeeper, who still has another three years left on his deal at Molineux.
The Black Cats conceded 44 goals in 46 regular season Championship games last season and will need to tighten up hugely to withstand Premier League attackers.
