Brighton and Hove Albion’s Maelys Mpome was stretchered off in their match against Arsenal, hit in the face by a cross from Caitlin Foord and knocked unconscious.

She immediately fell to the floor, with play stopping for over ten minutes while she received treatment.

As she was taken off the pitch, she was placed in a head brace and was receiving oxygen.

BBC Sport – who were broadcasting the match – later confirmed she had received a concussion.

But Brighton boss Dario Vidosic had some better news for fans, saying later in the afternoon to the club website: “She’s up and about and having a shower which is very good news.

“She will continue to be assessed but fingers crossed she’s okay as it’s important for players to come off the pitch as healthy as when they stepped on it.”

“Maelys Mpome says she is fine”

And women’s football writer Sylvain Jamet said on social media: “I just spoke to [Mpome] and she said she is fine, which is a very good news.”

Mpome signed for Brighton in 2024 after a single season at Chelsea.

Arsenal won the match 1-0 with their goal being attributed to Marisa Olislagers, taking a deflection from an Olivia Smith shot.

It leaves the Gunners fifth in the Women’s Super League table after their first win in a month.

Brighton are “very light as a squad” – Vidosic

Brighton are seventh, and Vidosic hinted they were frustrated with a narrow loss, having been without Rosa Kafaji and Michelle Agyemang, both unable to play against their parent club.

“We’re in a difficult moment where we’re very light as a squad and we’ve lost two starters as they couldn’t play against their parent club today, but there were a lot of good things to take from the performance.

“Whether it’s away or at home, we want to win every game but we also have to put certain situations into context. With a thin squad at the moment, fatigue played its part towards the end of the game. It’s also our third game in a week while they were bringing on some good players at the end – so even though it was a loss we remain positive, we dust ourselves down and we go again in the League Cup.”

That was a reference to Brighton’s next match – at home against Southampton in the Subway Women’s League Cup, next Sunday, 19th October.
