U.S. Open Cup Round of 16

Artikelbild:U.S. Open Cup Round of 16

We’re taking a look at this week’s matchups int he Round of 16, offering some background and hot takes. All games are streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S.A. and Canada, and should be covered on the CBS Golazo! show.

New England Revolution vs. Chicago Fire FC

  • Tuesday, May 20 @ 7:30 PM ET Anderson Stadium (Providence College), Providence, Rhode Island
  • Current standings New England Revolution: 11th in the East; 19th overall. Chicago Fire: 9th in the East; 15th overall.
  • Last five games New England Revolution: DDWWW Chicago Fire: WWDLL
  • The Hooligan Take This is the best fixture of the lot. Let me explain. New England are on a run of seven games unbeaten, five of them were shutouts. Chicago Fire have a quartet of insanely dynamic attackers in Cuypers, Gutierrez, Zinckernagel and Bamba. These two mutually opposing strategies will come together and hopefully result in an explosive match.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Portland Timbers

  • Tuesday, May 20 @ 10:30 PM ET PayPal Park, San Jose, California
  • Current standings San Jose Earthquakes: 8th in the West; 17th overall. Portland Timbers: 4th in the West; 9th overall.
  • Last five games San Jose Earthquakes: DDWWL Portland Timbers: DDWLW
  • The Hooligan Take If you go by the data, Portland Timbers would have a slight advantage simply based on ranking. But data doesn’t tell the complete story. Both these teams are Jekyll/Hyde creatures, and you’re never sure which one will set foot on the pitch. The Quakes have a more explosive offensive threat, and coupled with their home field makes me lean their way.

D.C. United vs. Charlotte FC

  • Wednesday, May 21 @ 7:30 PM ET Audi Field, Washington, District of Columbia
  • Current standings D.C. United: 12th in the East; 24th overall. Charlotte FC: 8th in the East; 14th overall.
  • Last five games D.C. United: DDLWL Charlotte FC: LLLLL
  • The Hooligan Take There will be a palpable odor of failure wafting through the concrete corridors of Audi Field tonight. D.C. United are struggled to find any consistency whatsoever. United has the third worst goal differential in the league (-12), offering a lifeline to a free falling Charlotte side who come here on five straight league losses in which they conceded fourteen goals! United will have to play Christian Benteke to have any hope of advancing and pray he finds the net. Charlotte will need Pep Biel to recover his earlier season creativity.

Minnesota United FC vs. St. Louis CITY SC

  • Wednesday, May 21 @ 7:30 PM ET Allianz Field, Saint Paul, Minnesota
  • Current standings Minnesota United FC: 2nd in the West; 5th overall. St. Louis CITY SC: 14th in the West; 27th overall.
  • Last five games Minnesota United FC: WLWWL St. Louis CITY SC: LDLLD
  • The Hooligan Take With so many MLS franchises sitting out the Open Cup this year it’s left the door open for clubs like Minnesota to make a run for the trophy. Despite two losses, the Loons are coming in with some momentum and are the heavy favorites in this one. St. Louis has the third lowest goals scored this season; I don’t see that changing against a Minnesota defense with the fewest goals allowed.

New York Red Bulls vs. FC Dallas

  • This match will be broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network.
  • Wednesday, May 21 @ 7:30 PM ET Sports Illustrated Stadium, Harrison, New Jersey
  • Current standings New York Red Bulls: 10th in the East; 18th overall. FC Dallas: 11th in the West; 22nd overall.
  • Last five games New York Red Bulls: LLWLW FC Dallas: L-DLW
  • The Hooligan Take There’s a large number of fixtures that feature teams sitting cheek-by-jowl in their standings. This is good in terms of competition. But sometimes this proximity just results in “meh”. This is one of those occasions. Neither side here are particularly good at the moment. Maybe this will a cracker, but with five games streaming at the same time, this would be my last choice to watch.

Orlando City SC vs. Nashville SC

  • Wednesday, May 21 @ 7:30 PM ET Inter&Co Stadium, Orlando, Florida
  • Current standings Orlando City SC: 4th in the East; 7th overall. Nashville SC: 5th in the East; 8th overall.
  • Last five games Orlando City SC: WWDDW Nashville SC: DWWDW
  • The Hooligan Take This is a fun matchup. We have two conference rivals who are neck-and-neck in the standings, with nearly identical form. What’s not to love? The head-to-head record heavily favors Orlando, but I suspect Sam Surridge and Hany Mukhtar will have strong showings and tip the odds Nashville’s way.

Philadelphia Union vs. Pittsburgh Riverhounds

  • Wednesday, May 21 @ 7:30 PM ET Subaru Park, Chester, Pennsylvania
  • Current standings Philadelphia Union: 1st in the East; 1st overall. Pittsburgh Riverhounds: 8th in the USL Championship East; 19th overall.
  • Last five games Philadelphia Union: WWDWW  Pittsburgh Riverhounds: LDLLL
  • The Hooligan Take The last standing USL Championship team, Pittsburgh Riverhounds, had the misfortune of drawing one the MLS’ hottest sides, Philadelphia Union. I do not see any hope for the ‘Hounds, they’re separated by 48 places in the standings and recent form is not in their favor. But there can be a little magic in an Open Cup, and if the Black and Gold could pull off the upset it would be one for the ages.

Austin FC vs. Houston Dynamo FC

  • Wednesday, May 21 @ 9:00 PM ET Q2 Stadium, Austin, Texas
  • Current standings Austin FC: 9th in the West; 20th overall. Houston Dynamo FC: 10th in the West; 21st overall.
  • Last five games Austin FC: DDLLL  Houston Dynamo FC: WWLLW
  • The Hooligan Take If this fixture had crossed my path three weeks ago I would have leaned heavily to the Green and Black of Austin. But something has clicked in Houston lately, and based on this recent resurgence I have to go Dynamo. Prediction: Brandon Vázquez will miss all his shots.
