Valencia ended their long-running comeback curse in the most dramatic fashion, turning the match against Deportivo Alavés late at Mestalla. The stadium erupted as Hugo Duro converted a penalty.
As reported by Superdeporte, Valencia overturned the deficit at the death after chasing the game for much of the night.
The victory ended the longest sequence in the club’s history without turning a game around. For almost three years, falling behind effectively meant failing to win. The previous comeback arrived when Javi Guerra hit a crucial goal against Real Valladolid in the survival fight under Rubén Baraja.
In total, Valencia had gone 109 consecutive matches without a comeback, a span of 1,046 days. Never before had the Mestalla side endured such a drought.
That last turnaround proved a giant step towards safety in an agonising season, and this one, coming a few games earlier, has to herald a change of outlook. The task now is to stop floundering in the relegation scrap.
The win leaves Valencia seven points above the drop and closer to seventh and eighth place, a hypothetical European zone, than to the bottom three.
