Mark van Bommel has praised his son Ruben’s start to life at PSV. However, the winger’s experienced father is convinced that the 21-year-old still has room for improvements.
Van Bommel was one of the PSV stars who scored in Saturday’s 5-3 away win over NEC Nijmegen. While there has been some slight criticism towards the new signing from AZ Alkmaar, this was already his third goal in five matches, and according to Mark, Ruben is right on track.
“He scored, and that’s what you have to do as a forward. When he’s up to speed, he’s almost unstoppable. You hardly see that anymore, the goalkeeper getting rounded,” Mark began on Ziggo Sport’s Rondo programme.
The 79-cap Dutch international called it crazy to talk about his son with such scrutiny already. “But he has depth in his game, and you hardly see that anymore. That’s a real weapon for a team.”
“I (still) think he can and should do better,” Mark continued, explaining how he interacts with his son and how he views him as a father. “He’s playing for a big club for the first time now. I’ll give him my opinion, but I won’t rewatch the entire match with him. I’m a fan in the stands, more nervous for him than when I played myself. But if I say something about his game, he already knows the answer. I’m especially proud.”
