Virgil van Dijk is confident Liverpool can show they are a ‘fantastic team’ in this season’s Champions League.

Liverpool begin their European campaign with a home clash against Atletico Madrid at Anfield this evening. The Reds topped the league phase last season, but bowed out in the Round of 16 to eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain on penalties.

Arne Slot’s side have strengthened significantly over the summer, securing British record deals for Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak among their business. Additionally, Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah signed new deals, with the former confident Liverpool can have a strong season in Europe.

“Obviously when I signed my deal I would hope to win everything that I’m going to participate in, but it doesn’t work like that unfortunately because you face so many great teams. But going into the start of this campaign I’m confident,” Van Dijk said at a pre-match press conference.

“I’m confident that we can show Europe that we are a fantastic team but you have to work for it. It’s all about the work that you put in – obviously on the pitch but off the pitch as well in order to be at your best. Tomorrow is a great start. We have high hopes. But tomorrow it can show again how difficult it is to be up there and we just have to take it game by game like we always do in the league. We don’t get ahead of ourselves, that’s the main thing.

“We have to stay fit, that’s the main thing. I think last year it shows if you don’t have many injuries [and have] a lot of players it can help – you can rotate, you can change the game in certain ways and that’s the aim again this season: find consistency, find your best form. It’s far too easy to say it than to actually do it but that’s the responsibility that we all have as players in order to be at our best.”
