This winter morning was spent waiting to find out whether the local council would allow the match to go ahead. Eventually, the snow cleared, and the game was permitted to be held before a raucous Anfield crowd. Liverpool had the opportunity to stretch their lead to eight points over second-placed Arsenal, with a game still in hand over their rivals. Unfortunately, the table-topping hosts did not take advantage of a visiting team in poor form, and only a handful of players in red warranted any praise for their performance.
From the outset of this intriguing contest, the Reds appeared to be second-best and struggled to meet the intensity of their opponents. Trent Alexander-Arnold was notably poor, while only Alexis Mac Allister consistently showed the required level of play against a resurgent Manchester United. The Argentine World Cup winner and his captain, Virgil van Dijk, were the only players who left the field with commendable performances.
Conor Bradley also demonstrated great effort during a spell on the pitch that should have come earlier. In terms of the eventual man of the match, the Reds’ towering defender and captain, VVD, never stopped issuing commands and was a formidable barrier determined to prevent Manchester United from securing an unexpected win at Anfield.

With the title still firmly in the hands of Arne Slot and his team, the Dutch head coach relied on his senior players to deliver vital moments in this significant encounter. Mohamed Salah scored from the penalty spot, while his 6-foot-4-inch leader on the pitch, Virgil, embodied the warrior spirit needed for this challenging game. Over a weekend where dropping points matched the results of their closest Premier League rival, Arsenal, this game could be perceived as a fair overall result, especially given the rain-soaked conditions mixed with ice.
Although the result and the single point were not what the majority expected, the chance to move nine points clear with a win from their game in hand is still noteworthy. The skipper of this team stands alongside the Egyptian King as a player capable of driving the Merseyside giants to ultimate success. If they achieve the Premier League title, this game could be a character-building moment that enables such glory.
Next up is a trip to face Spurs in the EFL Cup semi-final, with the first leg being played out at White Hart Lane. After that, the FA Cup will avail itself with the visit of English minnows, Accrington Stanley.
Steven Smith’s Pre-match Prediction;
