FC Barcelona got the full three points from their last La Liga game as they beat a tough Celta Vigo side. These three points mean the Blaugranes are now trailing Real Madrid by only three points at the top of the league table, after the Merengues had drawn a blank in their match against Rayo Vallecano.
Although Hansi Flick was quite happy with his team’s performance, this was not really an easy match for the Catalans, especially in the first half. The two teams continued to trade blows in this first half, which ended 3-2 in favor of Barcelona.
One of the moments from this half that generated some controversy was the penalty given to the Blaugranes for the handball by Marcos Alonso. However, the controversy surrounding this event died down to a significant extent after the Celta coach Claudio Giraldez refused to see anything out of the ordinary in this referee decision.
Furthermore, the conversation between the referee for this game, Alberola Rojas, and the VAR team, which has been published by SPORT, has now also revealed the referee’s reasoning for awarding Barcelona with this penalty. The conversation between the on-field official and the VAR team went as follows:
“Javi, look, this is Valen. I recommend a review so you can assess a potential handball penalty. I’ll show you the point of impact first, and then I’ll give you the play’s dynamics.”
“Okay, I see it there, the extended arm. I can see the arm is extended. Yes, yes, yes. And the ball is going toward the goal. Stop it at the point of impact. Stop it, stop it, stop it. There, at the point of impact. Yes, the arm is away from the body, the ball is going toward goal — it’s a penalty.”
This penalty was then converted by Robert Lewandowski, as he opened his scoring before adding two more to his name, and giving Barcelona the full three points.
