Flamengo began preparations for Friday’s friendly with Olimpia in Brasília, the last test of their mid-season programme. According to Globo.com, Varela and De la Cruz trained fully with the group after returning from post-World Cup breaks following Uruguay’s group-stage exit, and could bolster the squad.

The squad returned to the Ninho do Urubu on Tuesday following a flight back from Portugal on Sunday and a day off on Monday. Kick-off is at 20:00 at Mané Garrincha, Brasília.

Plata also reported back but worked only indoors, with his fitness to be assessed in the coming days to determine whether he will be selected.

Arrascaeta and Paquetá are back at the training ground to continue recovery from a right calf and a left thigh issue respectively. Arrascaeta trained separately on the pitch and is closer to a return. Centre-back Léo Ortiz also worked alongside him, nearing the end of his transition after a right thigh injury, the first muscular injury of his career, and has a chance to face Olimpia.

Of the nine World Cup call-ups, Alex Sandro, Danilo, Léo Pereira and Carrascal have yet to report back. All four went out in the last 16, the first three with Brazil and the latter with Colombia.
