Varela converts late penalty as Porto stay top | OneFootball

Porto beat Vitória S.C. 1-0 at Estádio Dom Afonso Henriques, Alan Varela's late spot kick keeping the leaders unbeaten and top on 52 points.

Samu Aghehowa missed from the spot in the 27th minute after the visitors were awarded a penalty. Porto also struck the woodwork twice as the first half ebbed and flowed.

Varela settled it from 12 yards (85.) after another foul in the box. Moments later, Vitória's Arcanjo received a second yellow and was sent off in the ninth minute of second half stoppage time.

Diogo Costa made three saves to preserve the advantage as the leaders managed the closing stages. Vitória registered 20 attempts, with three on target. Porto produced 12 attempts, also testing the goalkeeper three times.

There was a brief stoppage in second half stoppage time as Toni Strata received treatment before returning to the pitch.
