Vasco banked an extra US$ 500,000 after a 1-0 win over Independiente Medellín sealed progression in the Sudamericana, taking prize money to about R$ 6 million.

The windfall followed the group phase earnings, which brought US$ 300,000 for participation and US$ 375,000 for three victories. According to PaponaColina, the latest win added around R$ 2.6 million to club coffers.

Conmebol pays progressively, with US$ 600,000 for the last 16, then US$ 700,000 for the quarter-finals and US$ 800,000 for the semi-finals. The runners-up receive US$ 2.5 million, the champions US$ 10 million.

Vasco will meet Olimpia of Paraguay in the last 16, renewing a clash from the group stage. Each side won once in that phase, suggesting another tight tie.

Sealing qualification at São Januário also delivered the Portuguese head coach’s first official victory. He had been under pressure after a debut defeat to Vitória in the Campeonato Brasileiro and a draw in the first leg in Colombia.
