According to PaponaColina, Vasco da Gama have opened talks to appoint Renato Gaúcho as head coach after Fernando Diniz was dismissed on Sunday, although no formal offer has been made.

An initial approach was made on Monday to the coach’s representatives to gauge the possibility of a deal. Early discussions are described as positive and there is an expectation of progress in the coming days.

Renato has been out of work since 24 September 2025, when he left Fluminense. His presence in Rio de Janeiro is considered a factor that could simplify talks.

Inside the club, he is viewed as the leading candidate, with other names sounded out but trailing at this stage.

Directors met after Diniz’s exit to define the ideal profile. They want someone to retain strengths from the previous set-up, notably in build-up play, and with strong squad management.

A turbulent start to the Campeonato Brasileiro has increased pressure to make a sound appointment, with little margin for error.

This is not Vasco’s first attempt to land Renato. In December 2024 the current board approached him, but he chose not to accept.

Now a free agent and settled in Rio, the context has shifted from that previous approach. The board are expected to advance discussions in the coming days, aiming to announce a new head coach swiftly and give the squad stability for the rest of the Brasileirão.
