Vasco faced Mexico in 1958, drawing 1-1 at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario to open a tour in a nation hosting the current World Cup. It was one chapter in the club’s long history of matches against national sides.

According to Globo.com, Vasco have played 33 games against national teams, with 20 wins, five draws and eight defeats.

Their first meeting with a national side came in January 1930, a 6-1 victory over the former Yugoslavia. Russinho scored three, Sant’Anna two and Mário Mattos one.

The most recent was on 12 January 2008 in the Dubai Tournament, a 1-0 win against the United Arab Emirates, settled by Alan Kardec.

That fixture fell during the club’s pre-season in the Emirates as part of a series of friendlies. Romário led the group on the trip but stayed on the bench and did not feature.
