Well, well, well.
All the talk tonight from a Chelsea perspective at the Amex was about goalkeepers. Robert Sanchez was dropped on Monday night after making a few terrible errors. But he’s back in the team tonight for the cup, with Filip Jorgensen presumably now locked in as first choice.
After all that, it was perhaps inevitable there would be a goalkeeper clanger tonight – and indeed we only had to wait 5 minutes. But against what you might have expected, it’s nothing to do with Sanchez.
Jadon Sancho swung a lovely ball out to the left wing to find the roaming Cole Palmer. He volleyed in a cross from the left which the Brighton goalkeeper somehow mishandled and fumbled into his own net. What a clanger!

Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen are competing for the number one spot at Chelsea now.
All Sanchez wants tonight is a nice quiet game to recover his form and confidence. Jorgensen is clearly going to get a run in the team now, and all the Spaniard can do is be patient and wait for his chance again.
There is no evidence yet that Jorgensen is a world beater, and he’s much younger and less experienced. There’s a very good chance he struggles and is himself dropped. All Sanchez can control now is his own performances – and tonight brings him a great chance to steady the ship.
Perhaps this open competition between them can push them on to great things – equally, maybe it makes them both jump and nervy. Goalkeepers need to be strong characters who thrive under pressure, so this is the sort of test we want to see of their character.
