According to O Jogo, FC Porto president André Villas-Boas said he had lost someone very close after Silvino Louro’s death on Thursday at 67. He recalled the adventures they shared from Porto to Chelsea and Inter Milan, adding their bond grew stronger in Milan.
He spoke outside Lisbon Central Mosque as the funeral cortege departed for Cemitério de Vale Flores in Feijó, Almada, where Louro will be buried. He arrived at around 13:00, joining many figures who had paid their respects in the morning.
Among those present were Pedro Proença, Toni, Domingos Paciência and Daniel Carriço, along with agent Jorge Mendes.
Matilde Faria, José Mourinho’s wife, attended on his behalf, with the Benfica coach in camp before Saturday’s match against Vitória de Guimarães at Estádio da Luz. The previous day Mourinho spent almost three hours at the wake, as did Rui Costa, Benfica’s president, with Louro a Benfica player from 1984 to 1994.
Also at the wake were João Vieira Pinto, a Portuguese Football Federation director, and Joaquim Evangelista and José Carlos of the players’ union, along with Shéu Han. Real Madrid sporting vice-president Emilio Butragueño also attended.
Born in Setúbal in 1959, Louro played for Vitória de Setúbal, Vitória de Guimarães, Desportivo das Aves, Benfica, FC Porto and Salgueiros, winning eight trophies and earning 23 caps for Portugal. He later worked as a goalkeeping coach with FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid and Manchester United on José Mourinho’s staff, before a final spell at Sudanese side Al Hilal Omdurman.
