Charlie Casper, one of Vincent Kompany’s most valued players during his time at Burnley, has been taken on trial by Manchester City, according to new reports. 

The 21-year-old was fast-tracked into the Burnley first-team as a teenager by City legend and former Clarets manager Kompany, who achieved a record-breaking EFL Championship title, ending the campaign with 101 points in 2023. 

Casper has made just three appearances in the English Football League – for Grimsby Town – having spent time on loan at National League North side Alfreton Town, though the shot-stopper has been on trial at Barnsley this summer too. 

It is understood that the EFL League One club remain interested, but accept that Charlie Casper’s opportunity of being on trial at Manchester City was far too good for them to turn down. 

Barnsley prepared to bid if City deal falls through

Manchester City’s coaches will now assess whether Casper is at the required level to become part of their squad, likely as part of the Under-21s group. Barnsley, however, are expected to keep a close eye on the situation, according to Football Insider.

If City fail to offer Charlie Casper, son of former Manchester United player Chris Casper, a permanent contract, Barnsley will be prepared to approach with a proposal for the goalkeeper. 

There have been high hopes for Casper’s development since he was involved with the Burnley first team at just 17 years of age, and he remains highly-regarded despite never playing a senior game for the Turf Moor side. 

If Manchester City do offer a permanent contract, he will likely be involved in the City Football Academy setup or sent out on loan to continue his development, intending to build on his impressive experience thus far. 

James Trafford to Leeds could help Casper’s chances

Going out on loan to another club would be the most logical option for Manchester City given their depth between the sticks. Gianluigi Donnarumma remains the club’s first-choice option, with James Trafford and Marcus Bettinelli as back-ups. 

On Thursday, however, Leeds United were confirmed to be in negotiations with City to sign Trafford, meaning a reshuffling could ensue throughout the Manchester club, providing Casper with a pathway to success in the City ranks. That deal is set to go through for an initial £40 million and £5 million in add-ons, with City set to include a sell-on clause.

City have placed a growing emphasis on improving their academy sides in recent seasons, and that focus is still in place with plenty of work ongoing behind the scenes following the arrival of new manager Enzo Maresca. 

Casper’s potential involvement in the Under-21s rides heavily on his performances until a deal is agreed, if ever. The goalkeeper would have to compete with Jack Wint, who has made 38 appearances across the Under-18s, Under-21s and Youth League.
